iOS 19 or iOS 26

Apple is reportedly planning a major shift in how it names its operating systems. Starting next year, instead of using traditional version numbers like iOS 19 or macOS 16, the company will move to a year-based naming system — similar to how car models are named for the upcoming year.

That means the current iOS 18 would be followed by iOS 26, aligning with the calendar year 2026. The same change will apply across the board, so we can expect to see iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.

According to people familiar with the matter, this change is meant to simplify Apple’s software lineup and make it easier for consumers to understand what version they’re using. The plan hasn’t been officially announced yet and remains private for now.
